You're sitting at a German-speaking dinner table. When it's your turn to talk, something blocks. The words don't come. Or they come out flat. Or you say something safe instead of what you actually meant. And you leave thinking: that was not me. Replaying the conversation in your head afterwards.

I still remember that moment at a dinner in Spain. My partner's friends asked me something and I froze like a deer in headlights. I wasn't sure I had understood everything, and at the same time I was trying to piece together the fragments in my head into something that made sense. That's when it hit me: all the rules meant nothing if I couldn't actually get them off my tongue.

As an applied linguist and trained German teacher I now know exactly where the problem lies. Why "war" and "gewesen" trip you up. Why sentence structure confuses you. And how you finally start speaking freely instead of translating every sentence in your head first.
